Our story
Every child deserves a good time
You're Invited was born from a simple belief — that neurodivergent children and their families deserve celebrations that truly include them, not just tolerate them.
"Look not only to your own interests,
but also to the interests of others."
— Philippians 2:4
Our mission
Good Times for Different Minds
We create sensory-considerate, inclusive events across Western North Carolina where neurodivergent children — those with autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, and other neurological variations — can show up exactly as they are and have the time of their lives.
Too often, birthday parties, holiday celebrations, and community events are designed for a narrow slice of how brains work. Loud music, flashing lights, unpredictable crowds, and unspoken social rules can turn what should be a joyful occasion into an overwhelming one.
You're Invited changes that. Every event we host is thoughtfully designed with sensory-friendly environments, clear schedules, quiet spaces, and trained volunteers who understand and celebrate neurodiversity.
How it started
From Backyard Waterslides to a Community of Connection
The story of You're Invited WNC began unexpectedly with the purchase of an inflatable waterslide. It seemed like the perfect gift for a four-year-old, nonverbal autistic boy who loved both water and slides. But when the waterslide arrived, he was completely unimpressed.
His lack of enthusiasm led his mom to extend the first invitations—not only in an effort to get her "money's worth," but also to create an opportunity for other families to enjoy it. A few moms bravely accepted, bringing their children together for an afternoon of fun.
What began as a small gathering quickly grew into a community. Monthly water parties became events the children eagerly anticipated. While the kids played, their moms shared favorite dishes, laughed together, and built friendships with people who understood their experiences without needing an explanation.
When the weather turned cold, the gatherings expanded beyond the backyard. We began organizing potlucks, bowling outings, and other activities that gave our families opportunities to connect in welcoming and supportive spaces.
With every event, our connections grew stronger. We saw how meaningful it was for children and parents to feel included, understood, and excited to participate.
As our community grew, so did our vision. We realized these opportunities should not be limited to a small group of families. Every child deserves the chance to attend a fun event, build friendships, and experience the joy of belonging. Every parent deserves to watch their child participate and connect while also finding support and community for themselves.
The backyard was where it all began, but the growing number of families, limited space, and parking challenges made it clear that this vision needed to expand.
What started as a small group of moms creating meaningful experiences for their children has become a shared commitment to families throughout Western North Carolina.
That shared commitment became You're Invited WNC.
